Here is everything you need to know about the new credits section.
NYSEG has added a new section to their monthly bill dedicated to solar credits
Solar credits are allocated ONLY to community solar members
Rather than pay NYSEG in full, community solar members get a discount on their credits
These solar credits can potentially offset your entire bill to NYSEG
If you don’t see this section on your bill yet, you can see if you are qualified by filling out this form or calling (855) 401 - 5847 to speak to a representative.
The below examples will walk you through how members of Solar Farms New York Program can pay nothing for electricity costs to NYSEG. Then simply pay Solar Farms New York for the offsetting credits at a guaranteed discounted rate.
NYSEG RELEASES NEW BILLING FORMAT SHOWING SOLAR CREDITS
On page three, there is a new section dedicated to Community Distributed Generation or “CDG”.
Now, you must be asking yourself - What is CDG?
CDG is utility’s designation for solar credits that are applied to members of community solar programs for their attributed share of the farm’s electricity production.
In the following example below, the CDG portion of the bill shows how many credits were allocated, applied and rolled over for the current bill month.
You can see that this community solar member received 6,278 kWh of solar credits in November alone.

DUE TO THE SOLAR CREDITS, THE SUPPLY CHARGES WERE ENTIRELY OFFSET AS WELL
In this real example, all the electricity supply charges were also covered by solar credits. This customer did not have to pay a penny to NYSEG for Electricity Supply or Delivery in November.
You can see this by looking at the “Subtotal Electricity Supply” which amounted to $0.00 due to NYSEG’s CDG generation credit allocation.
Did you see the new “credits” section added to your latest NYSEG bill?
AS A RESULT OF THESE SOLAR CREDITS, THIS CUSTOMER HAS PAID NOTHING IN NOVEMBER TO NYSEG FOR ELECTRICITY SUPPLY AND DELIVERY
HOW MANY SOLAR CREDITS ARE ALLOCATED TO EACH MEMBER EACH MONTH?
The amount of solar credits allocated to a customer who is a solar farm member depends on how much electricity the member’s household uses on a monthly basis. NYSEG allocates a percentage of the solar farm’s energy production based on that usage estimate by placing a value for the solar credits and deducting this amount from both the electricity supply and delivery portion of the bill.
In the following example below, this customer had all their Electricity Delivery Charges offset by their solar credits. The member received a $57.08 credit, reducing their NYSEG delivery charges to just $15.11.
Please note, Solar Credits do not offset the Basic Service Charge.
IS THE ELECTRICITY FREE?
Solar credits are allocated to community solar members. Rather than pay NYSEG in full, community solar members get a discount on their credits. While the electricity is not free, members get a discount. In our example, this customer received over $100 in solar credit value. They simply pay their community solar provider at a discount rate.
HOW DO I TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THIS FREE PROGRAM?
Do you see this new section on your bill? If not, you might be eligible to participate in this free program.
To participate in community solar you have several options. You can buy roof panels upfront which will have upfront costs or you can join a community solar farm on a “Pay As You Go” program without upfront costs or commitments.
“Pay As You Go” plans are highly recommended (more than 11,852 households have already enrolled), are free to join and to participate, and you can cancel any time without penalty, for example, if you ever want to me move.
To get started, you simply need to register your NYSEG account number along with other household information.
